In Venom: The Last Dance (2024), Eddie Brock and Venom aren’t just running from the government and giant alien monsters. They’re carrying something that could free one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains.
That something is the Codex. It sounds like a mysterious object hidden in a secret vault, but the truth is much stranger: the Codex exists because Venom once saved Eddie’s life. Here’s how it works and why Knull desperately wants it.
Spoiler Warning: Major spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance follow.
What Is the Codex?
The Codex is a special life-force connection created when a symbiote brings its host back from the dead. In the first Venom movie, Eddie is dying after his battle with Carlton Drake and Riot. Venom helps revive him, saving his life.
That moment creates the Codex inside their shared bond. Eddie and Venom don’t carry a separate physical key around; the Codex is tied to their connection.
The catch? It remains active while both Eddie and Venom are alive. If either one dies, the Codex is destroyed.
Who Is Knull, and Why Does He Need It?
Knull is the creator of the symbiotes and a powerful villain imprisoned by the very creatures he created. He wants to escape his prison and unleash his power across the universe.
The Codex is the key that can help him break free. That’s why he sends the Xenophages—terrifying creatures capable of tracking the Codex—to hunt Eddie and Venom.
For Knull, this isn’t simply about capturing two fugitives. It’s about recovering the one thing that can undo his imprisonment. If he succeeds, the consequences could extend far beyond Earth.
Why Can’t Eddie and Venom Just Hide It?
Unfortunately, the Codex isn’t a phone they can switch off or a document they can bury underground.
The Xenophages can detect it when Venom fully reveals himself. That forces Eddie and Venom into an impossible situation: Venom must use his powers to protect Eddie, but doing so can expose their location.
Every escape buys them a little time, but it doesn’t solve the problem. As long as the Codex exists, Knull’s hunters have a reason to keep coming.
Why Does Venom Destroy the Codex?
During the final battle at Area 51, the Xenophages overwhelm the defenders. Eddie and Venom realize they cannot keep running, and the Codex must be destroyed to stop Knull from getting it.
Because the Codex disappears only when Eddie or Venom dies, their escape comes with a terrible price. Venom refuses to let Eddie sacrifice himself.
He separates from Eddie, gathers the Xenophages, and moves toward the facility’s acid tanks. With help from the mortally wounded Rex Strickland, the plan ends in an explosion that destroys the creatures and apparently kills Venom.
Venom’s sacrifice destroys the Codex and prevents Knull from using it to escape. More importantly, it shows how far Venom has come: the symbiote who once treated Eddie as a useful host now gives up his own life to save him.
Does Knull Get the Codex in the End?
No. Venom’s sacrifice prevents Knull from obtaining the key, and Knull remains imprisoned. However, the mid-credits scene shows him threatening revenge, suggesting that his story may not be over.
The post-credits scene also shows a cockroach near the wreckage and a broken vial that held symbiote material. It hints that some material may have survived, but it doesn’t confirm that Venom himself has returned.
Final Thoughts
The Codex turns Venom’s greatest act of love into the danger that threatens the universe. Venom saved Eddie in the first movie, accidentally creating the key Knull needs. In the final film, he sacrifices himself to destroy that same key.
It’s a tragic full-circle moment—and proof that Eddie and Venom’s bond became much more than a partnership.
