Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water looks like a massive underwater adventure, but its ending is really about one thing: family.

Jake Sully and Neytiri spend most of the movie trying to protect their children from Colonel Quaritch. They even leave their home and seek safety with the Metkayina reef clan. But after the final battle, Jake finally understands something he has been trying to avoid.

Running away cannot protect his family forever.

And the price of that realization is devastating.

What Happens to Neteyam?

During the battle with Quaritch’s forces, Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son, Neteyam, is shot while helping Lo’ak, Spider and Tsireya escape the sinking ship.

Jake desperately tries to save him, but Neteyam dies in his parents’ arms.

This is the emotional breaking point of the movie.

Neteyam was the responsible older brother – the child who often tried to protect Lo’ak and keep the family together. His death isn’t treated like a temporary superhero setback. The family actually has to live with the loss.

The official Avatar site lists Neteyam as one of Jake and Neytiri’s children and describes the film as a story about the Sully family’s struggles and tragedies.

Why Does Jake Stop Running?

Earlier in the movie, Jake believes the best way to protect his family is to disappear.

He leaves the Omatikaya and takes his family to the Metkayina because Quaritch is specifically hunting him.

But the strategy fails.

Quaritch eventually finds them anyway, and Jake’s attempt to keep his family away from the war puts them into another dangerous situation.

After Neteyam’s death, Jake changes his thinking.

He realizes that there may be no safe place to hide from the RDA.

Instead of constantly moving his family away from the fight, Jake decides that he has to stand and fight.

That is why his final decision is so important.

What Does Neytiri's Sacrifice Mean?

Neytiri’s sacrifice is not simply about risking her life during the final battle.

She has already lost her son.

Yet she continues fighting to save Kiri and Tuk.

When Quaritch uses Kiri as leverage, Neytiri responds by using Spider as her own leverage. She is pushed into an extremely dangerous emotional situation where protecting her remaining children matters more than anything else.

This shows the darker side of parental love.

Neytiri isn’t fighting because she wants glory. She is fighting because, after losing Neteyam, she refuses to lose another child.

Her actions also show how much the war has changed her. The gentle connection between family and nature that defines Pandora is still there, but now it exists alongside grief and rage.

Why Does Jake Return to the Water?

The movie begins with Jake learning how to live as a family man and ends with him accepting that this family is now permanently connected to the Metkayina and Pandora’s oceans.

After Neteyam’s funeral, Jake initially says the family should leave.

But Tonowari tells him that they are no longer outsiders.

They are part of the reef clan.

Jake finally accepts that.

The ocean, which initially represents something unfamiliar to the Sullys, has become their new home.

Why Doesn't Jake Kill Quaritch?

Jake defeats Quaritch underwater and leaves him unconscious.

It would have been easy to treat this as the end of their rivalry, but the movie deliberately leaves Quaritch alive.

Even more importantly, Spider saves him.

Spider then returns to Jake and Neytiri’s family instead of staying with his biological father.

That decision creates a complicated relationship between Spider and Quaritch that can continue beyond this movie.

What Does the Ending Really Mean?

The ending isn’t really saying that Jake and Neytiri won.

They lost Neteyam.

Their home has changed.

The threat from the humans is still there.

Quaritch survives.

But Jake finally understands that protecting his family isn’t about finding a place where danger doesn’t exist.

It’s about deciding what—and who—he is willing to fight for.

The title The Way of Water becomes especially meaningful here. Water moves, adapts and finds another path when something blocks it.

Jake does the same.

He changes from a soldier trying to escape his enemy into a father who accepts that his family has a place on Pandora and that he must defend it.

The final moments therefore feel less like a victory celebration and more like the beginning of a new chapter.

Jake and Neytiri didn’t sacrifice everything to win a war. They sacrificed everything to keep their family together and now they have chosen to stop running.
