Spoiler warning: Major spoilers for Venom (2018).

Eddie Brock begins Venom as a journalist whose obsession with exposing corruption destroys his career and relationship. By the ending, he shares his body with an alien who enjoys eating people—and somehow, they make a surprisingly good team.

But how does their strange partnership become a real bond? And why does Venom turn against his own kind to save Earth?

Why Eddie and Venom Initially Fight Each Other

Eddie discovers that the Life Foundation, led by Carlton Drake, is experimenting on humans using alien symbiotes. During his investigation, one symbiote transfers to Eddie and introduces itself as Venom.

Their relationship starts as a struggle for control. Venom wants to survive and initially supports the symbiotes’ plan to conquer Earth. Eddie wants his old life back and has no interest in becoming an alien’s walking lunchbox.

However, their shared body gives Eddie incredible strength, speed, healing, and the ability to transform into a monstrous creature. As they learn to work together, each discovers something useful in the other.

Why Does Venom Change His Mind About Earth?

Venom originally comes to Earth with the other symbiotes, who plan to use human hosts as part of their invasion. But his time with Eddie changes his perspective.

Eddie is imperfect, impulsive, and often makes terrible decisions, yet he shows courage and compassion. Venom also discovers that he enjoys life on Earth—especially the opportunity to eat criminals.

Venom eventually tells Eddie that he has changed his mind. Instead of helping his species invade, he chooses to protect the planet. Their partnership becomes a genuine alliance rather than a simple parasite-and-host arrangement.

How Do Eddie and Venom Defeat Riot?

Riot, another powerful symbiote, bonds with Carlton Drake and plans to launch a spacecraft to bring more symbiotes to Earth.

Eddie and Venom confront them at the Life Foundation’s launch site. Riot’s strength makes him a formidable opponent, and he appears to have the upper hand.

Venom realizes that stopping the launch is the only way to prevent the invasion. During the battle, he damages the spacecraft, causing it to explode with Riot and Drake aboard.

Venom appears to die in the explosion while saving Eddie. But the story has one last surprise.

Did Venom Really Die?

No. Venom secretly survives and remains bonded with Eddie.

Anne Weying believes Eddie has lost the symbiote, but Eddie later reveals that Venom is still with him. The two continue their unusual partnership, using their powers to stop criminals in San Francisco.

Their bond is now based on more than survival. Eddie has accepted that Venom is part of his life, while Venom has decided that protecting Eddie—and Earth—is worth doing.

They don’t become identical in personality. Eddie still has a conscience, and Venom still has some very questionable dietary preferences. But together, they make a formidable team.

What Does the Post-Credits Scene Mean?

The mid-credits scene shows Eddie visiting imprisoned serial killer Cletus Kasady for an interview. Kasady warns that when he escapes, there will be “carnage.”

This introduces a future enemy: Carnage, one of Venom’s most dangerous comic-book rivals. The scene sets up a conflict that continues in Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

A separate post-credits scene previews Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, connecting the film’s theatrical release to Sony’s animated Spider-Man adventure.

Final Thoughts

The ending of Venom is about two very different beings choosing to work together. Eddie gives Venom a reason to question his mission, while Venom gives Eddie the power to fight back against people who abuse it.

They don’t become one because they lose their individual identities. They become a team because they learn to accept their differences and make a choice to protect others.

And with Carnage waiting in the wings, their partnership is only getting started.
