Spoiler warning: This article reveals the ending of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
Thor spends most of Thor: Ragnarok trying to save Asgard. So why does he eventually help destroy it?
Because he discovers something his father’s kingdom taught him to overlook: Asgard isn’t its golden palace, its throne, or its walls. Asgard is its people.
When Hela, the Goddess of Death, takes over the kingdom, Thor realizes that winning a normal battle may be impossible. His final decision changes everything for the Asgardians—and sets up the heartbreaking opening of Avengers: Infinity War.
Why Couldn’t Thor Defeat Hela?
Hela is Odin’s firstborn child and the original conqueror of Asgard’s armies. After Odin dies, she escapes her imprisonment and immediately proves how dangerous she is by destroying Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, with her bare hands.
Her power grows stronger while she is on Asgard. Thor, Loki, and their allies discover that defeating her with ordinary strength and weapons may not be enough.
Thor eventually understands that Hela’s connection to Asgard is also the source of her advantage. If he wants to stop her, he needs a solution bigger than another fight.
What Does Thor Realize During His Vision of Odin?
During the final battle, Thor loses an eye while fighting Hela. At his lowest point, he experiences a vision of Odin, who reminds him that Thor’s true power was never dependent on Mjolnir.
This is the moment Thor finally understands that his hammer was a tool, not the source of his strength.
He unleashes his lightning powers and fights Hela again. But even with this new understanding, Thor recognizes that he cannot simply overpower her. He needs to trigger Ragnarok.
Why Does Thor Release Surtur?
Ragnarok is the destruction of Asgard, and Surtur is the fire demon destined to bring it about.
Earlier in the film, Thor defeats Surtur and keeps his crown. During the climax, Thor tells Loki to retrieve that crown and place it in the Eternal Flame inside Asgard’s vault.
The Eternal Flame restores Surtur to his full, enormous form. Surtur then attacks Asgard, bringing the prophecy to life.
Thor knows that Surtur’s destruction is the only realistic way to stop Hela. He accepts the loss of his homeland because the alternative is allowing Hela to continue her conquest.
Does Hela Die When Asgard Is Destroyed?
The film strongly implies that Hela is killed when Surtur destroys Asgard, although it does not show a detailed final death scene.
The destruction also ends her immediate threat to the Nine Realms. Thor’s plan succeeds, but victory comes at an enormous cost: the destruction of the kingdom he was born to rule.
It’s a strange kind of superhero victory. Thor saves his people by sacrificing the place they have always called home.
Why Is Asgard’s Destruction Actually a Victory?
For generations, Asgard’s rulers treated the kingdom as a symbol of power, glory, and conquest. Odin’s history with Hela reveals that its beautiful image hides a much darker past.
Thor chooses a different path. Instead of protecting the palace and the throne at any cost, he protects the people who depend on him.
He becomes king not because he preserves Asgard’s old traditions, but because he is willing to abandon them when they threaten his people.
The survivors escape aboard a spaceship, and Thor accepts his new role as their leader. Asgard may be gone, but its people remain.
What Does the Ending Set Up for Infinity War?
In the mid-credits scene, Thor and Loki see a gigantic spaceship blocking their journey toward Earth. The ship is Sanctuary II, Thanos’s vessel, as later confirmed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
This leads directly into Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos attacks the Asgardian survivors, kills Heimdall and Loki, and takes the Tesseract containing the Space Stone.
Thor’s decision saves the Asgardians from Hela, but it cannot protect them from the next threat.
The bottom line: Thor destroys Asgard because he finally understands what a king should protect. A kingdom can be rebuilt, but its people cannot be replaced. That choice makes him a better king—and leaves him facing an even more dangerous enemy.
