Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007).
The ending of Alien vs. Predator: Requiem is brutally simple.
The Aliens have escaped. The Predator has failed to contain them. Gunnison, Colorado, is already overrun, and the military decides that saving the town is no longer possible.
So they drop a nuclear bomb on it.
The result is one of the darkest endings in the Alien vs. Predator franchise. But why did the government choose to destroy an entire American town?
The Alien Outbreak Had Become Impossible to Contain
The disaster begins when the Predalien escapes from the Predator ship and starts creating more Xenomorphs.
The creatures spread through Gunnison quickly.
People are attacked in homes, streets, hospitals, and other parts of the town. The Alien population keeps growing, while the Predator known as Wolf is trying to eliminate every trace of the infestation.
The official synopsis describes Wolf’s mission as wiping out the Alien infestation from Earth, regardless of who gets caught in the middle.
At that point, the problem is no longer a normal monster attack.
It is a biological outbreak.
Why Didn't the Military Simply Rescue Everyone?
The military attempts to control the situation, but Gunnison is already collapsing.
There are too many Aliens, too much confusion, and too little time.
An ordinary evacuation also creates a huge risk: anyone escaping the town could potentially carry the infestation somewhere else.
That is the nightmare scenario the military is trying to prevent.
If even a small number of Xenomorphs escaped into a major city, the consequences could be far worse.
The Nuclear Strike Was a Containment Decision
The movie never gives the government a long explanation for its decision.
Instead, the ending shows the result.
The military launches a nuclear strike against Gunnison, destroying the town and the creatures inside it.
So the basic logic is containment through total destruction.
The government cannot reliably separate infected people from uninfected people anymore, and the Alien threat cannot be allowed to spread beyond the area.
It is an extreme solution, but within the movie’s story, the military sees it as the final way to stop the outbreak.
Why Was Gunnison Sacrificed?
This is what makes the ending so disturbing.
The people of Gunnison are not responsible for the invasion.
Most of them don’t even understand what is happening.
Characters such as Dallas, Kelly, Ricky, and Molly are simply trying to survive while the larger military response develops around them.
The town becomes expendable because the government prioritizes stopping the Alien infestation over saving everyone trapped inside it.
That is also why the ending feels so different from a traditional monster-movie victory.
There is no rescue helicopter arriving at the last second.
There is no military force defeating the Aliens.
There is simply a bomb.
Did the Predator Cause the Nuclear Strike?
Not directly.
Wolf’s mission is actually the opposite: he is trying to prevent the infestation from spreading.
He hunts the Aliens, destroys evidence, and fights the Predalien.
But his mission fails to completely contain the outbreak.
The nuclear strike becomes the human military’s solution after the situation has gone beyond conventional control.
In other words, the Predator is trying to clean up the disaster, while the military ultimately decides to erase the entire battlefield.
What Happens to the Survivors?
The ending strongly suggests that the nuclear strike kills almost everyone left in Gunnison.
Amanda and Dallas, however, escape the immediate area before the bomb detonates.
Their survival gives the audience a small piece of hope after one of the movie’s bleakest sequences.
But the movie doesn’t pretend that everyone made it out.
The town itself is effectively erased.
The Most Important Twist Comes After the Explosion
Just when it seems the story is over, the movie jumps to a meeting involving a mysterious woman connected to the corporation.
She receives the Predator’s advanced weapon.
The woman is revealed to be Ms. Yutani.
That name is extremely important to Alien fans because Weyland-Yutani becomes the major corporation associated with the later Alien films.
The scene therefore suggests that the Predator technology has now entered human corporate hands.
And that creates an intriguing connection between the AVP storyline and the corporate technology obsession seen throughout the Alien series.
Why the Ending Matters
The nuclear explosion isn’t just there for shock value.
It shows how completely the situation has gone wrong.
In Alien vs. Predator, the creatures were trapped inside an ancient pyramid in Antarctica. In Requiem, the battle reaches a modern American town.
The threat has escaped into the human world.
The military’s answer is to destroy the entire location before the infection can spread.
And then the final Yutani scene quietly suggests that humanity may have learned something from the incident—especially about Predator technology.
That creates a strange final irony: the town is destroyed to eliminate the Alien threat, but the technology left behind may become valuable to the very corporations that later become obsessed with extraterrestrial technology.
Final Verdict
My Rating: 3/5
The ending of Alien vs. Predator: Requiem is easily one of its most memorable ideas.
The nuclear strike gives the movie a genuinely bleak conclusion, while the Yutani reveal expands the crossover mythology.
The problem is that the film doesn’t spend enough time exploring the consequences. The decision to destroy Gunnison could have been a much deeper moral and political storyline.
Instead, the movie moves quickly toward the explosion.
Still, that final image leaves one uncomfortable question behind:
Was destroying Gunnison the only way to stop the Aliens—or simply the easiest way to hide the disaster?
FAQs
1. Why did the government nuke Gunnison in Alien vs. Predator: Requiem?
The military used the nuclear strike as a containment measure after the Alien infestation became too widespread to control conventionally. The goal was to destroy the Aliens before they could spread beyond Gunnison.
2. Did everyone in Gunnison die?
The nuclear strike destroys the town and kills most people who remain there. Amanda and Dallas escape before the explosion.
3. Did Wolf survive the nuclear explosion?
No. Wolf remains in Gunnison fighting the Predalien and is caught in the destruction.
4. Who receives the Predator weapon at the end?
Ms. Yutani receives the Predator weapon after the Gunnison incident. The scene provides a connection to the Weyland-Yutani corporation from the Alien mythology.
5. What happens to the Predalien?
The Predalien is killed when Wolf detonates an explosive during their final confrontation. The nuclear strike then destroys the remaining area. The Predalien had become the central Alien threat after emerging from Scar’s body at the end of Alien vs. Predator.
