Terminator: Dark Fate ends with something the Terminator franchise has always struggled to give its characters: a chance to face the future without knowing exactly what comes next.
The final battle destroys the Rev-9, but it also costs Grace and Carl their lives. Sarah Connor survives — and instead of walking away from another machine war, she chooses to prepare Dani Ramos for what is coming.
So what does Sarah’s final choice actually mean?
The Rev-9 Is Finally Destroyed
The final battle takes place inside a hydroelectric facility.
The Rev-9 has already been badly damaged, but its endoskeleton is still moving. Grace realizes there is only one weapon powerful enough to finish it: her own energy source.
Dani removes Grace’s power core and uses it against the Rev-9.
But Dani cannot overpower the machine alone.
That’s when Carl wakes up.
The T-800 grabs the Rev-9 and holds it in place while Dani drives Grace’s power source into the machine. Carl then drags the Rev-9 into the pit and sacrifices himself.
His final words are:
“For John.”
The explosion destroys both Terminators.
Why Carl's Death Matters to Sarah
Carl is the Terminator who killed John Connor in 1998.
For most of the movie, Sarah cannot forgive him.
Yet Carl has spent years trying to give meaning to what he did. After completing his mission, he developed a form of conscience through his life among humans and secretly sent Sarah information about other Terminators arriving from the future. Every message ended with “For John.”
His final sacrifice completes that strange redemption arc.
Sarah doesn’t forget what Carl did.
But she accepts his help.
And when Carl dies protecting Dani, Sarah loses another person who had become part of this new fight.
Grace's Death Changes Dani
Grace also sacrifices herself.
Before dying, she tells Dani to use her power source to destroy the Rev-9.
That moment is important because Dani is no longer the frightened young woman who needed Grace to protect her.
She makes the decision herself.
Grace’s death also connects the two timelines. In the future, Dani will become a leader of the human Resistance and will eventually save a young Grace.
So the person who dies protecting Dani in 2020 is someone Dani will later protect herself.
That’s classic Terminator time-travel storytelling: the future helps create the person who makes that future possible.
What Happened to Skynet?
This is one of the most important details.
Sarah and John successfully prevented the original version of Judgment Day after the events of Terminator 2.
But humanity didn’t permanently escape its future.
Instead, a different artificial intelligence called Legion eventually becomes self-aware and starts a new machine war.
So Sarah technically succeeded — Skynet is gone.
The problem is that removing one version of the future doesn’t remove humanity’s ability to create another one.
That is why Dark Fate introduces Legion instead of simply bringing Skynet back.
Dani Is the New John Connor
This is the biggest change Sarah has to accept.
John was once the person Sarah believed she had to protect because he would become humanity’s future leader.
Now that role belongs to Dani.
Grace reveals that Dani will eventually become a central Resistance leader and help build the fight against Legion.
Sarah realizes that her purpose has changed.
She is no longer protecting her own son from a Terminator.
She is preparing the next person who could save humanity.
What Does Sarah's Final Choice Mean?
The final scene shows Sarah and Dani watching a young Grace at a playground.
Dani knows what Grace will eventually become.
She also knows that Grace is destined to die protecting her.
Instead of simply accepting that future, Dani decides she will change it.
Sarah then tells Dani that if she really is going to become the future leader of the Resistance, she needs to be ready.
And they drive away together.
This is Sarah’s most important choice in the entire ending.
She chooses preparation over prophecy.
Sarah spent much of her life believing that the future was something she had to prevent.
Now she understands that the future can also be something she helps shape.
Does Dark Fate Set Up Another Terminator Movie?
Absolutely.
The ending clearly leaves the door open.
Dani is becoming the new Resistance leader, Sarah is training her, Legion still exists in the future, and young Grace’s life has become something Dani wants to protect.
The movie was conceived as a direct continuation of Terminator 2 and as the beginning of a potential new direction for the franchise.
However, no continuation of this storyline followed.
So today, the ending works as both a potential beginning and a conclusion.
Sarah has passed the responsibility to Dani.
The war hasn’t happened yet.
And for once, the characters drive toward that uncertain future with the knowledge that it can still be changed.
Rating: 4/5
The ending doesn’t give Sarah another simple “stop Judgment Day” mission. Instead, it gives her something more personal: help Dani become the person who can face the next machine war.
